Lucy Maud Montgomery #39;s classic children #39;s novel tells the tale of Anne Shirley, a red-headed orphan mistakenly fostered on Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, two middle aged siblings who run a small farm on Canada #39;s Prince Edward Island. The Cuthberts had #39;ordered #39; an orphan boy to help in the fields, but Anne #39;s talkative nature, her romantic nature and irrepressible optimism gradually charm the staid old couple.

She is allowed to stay and is soon popular with her schoolmates, especially her bosom friend Diana, and the handsome and annoying Gilbert Blythe, whom Anne refuses to speak to after he jokingly calls her #39;Carrots #39;. The author lovingly traces Anne #39;s journey through childhood, following her adventures and misadventures from a naïve, melodramatic child to an intelligent, selfless young woman who, despite setbacks, remains unconquerably optimistic about life and the human condition.

They are waiting for an orphan boy to help with the work at Green Gables - but a skinny, red-haired girl turns up instead. Feisty and full of spirit, Anne Shirley charms her way into the Cuthberts\' affection with her vivid imagination and constant chatter.

It\'s not long before Anne finds herself in trouble, but soon it becomes impossible for the Cuthberts to imagine life without \'their\' Anne - and for the people of Avonlea to recall what it was like before this wildly creative little girl whirled into town.\n.

MRS. Rachel Lynde lived just where the Avonlea main road dipped down into a little hollow, fringed with alders and ladies #39; eardrops and traversed by a brook that had its source away back in the woods of the old Cuthbert place; it was reputed to be an intricate, headlong brook in its earlier course through those woods, with dark secrets of pool and cascade; but by the time it reached Lynde #39;s Hollow it was a quiet, well-conducted little stream, for not even a brook could run past Mrs.

Rachel Lynde #39;s door without due regard for decency and decorum; it probably was conscious that Mrs. Rachel was sitting at her window, keeping a sharp eye on everything that passed, from brooks and children up, and that if she noticed anything odd or out of place she would never rest until she had ferreted out the whys and wherefores thereof.

Though Anne of Green Gables is written for all ages, it has been considered a children #39;s novel since the mid-twentieth century. #34;Matthew Cuthbert, who #39;s that? #34; she ejaculated.

#34;Where is the boy? #34; Matthew had been to the train station to fetch the child they were to adopt, a boy. Marilla had insisted on a boy.

#34;There wasn #39;t any boy, #34; said Matthew wretchedly. #34;There was only her.

#34; He nodded at the girl. He didn #39;t know her name.

He was embarrassed to realize that he had never even asked her name. #34;No boy! But there must have been a boy, #34; insisted Marilla.

#34;We sent word to Mrs. Spencer to bring a boy.

#34; #34;Well, she didn #39;t. She brought her.

I asked the station-master. And I had to bring her home.

She couldn #39;t be left there, no matter where the mistake had come in. #34; #34;Well, this is a pretty piece of business! #34; ejaculated Marilla.

During this dialogue the child had remained silent, her eyes roving from one to the other, all the animation fading out of her face. Suddenly she seemed to grasp the full meaning of what had been said.

Dropping her precious carpet-bag she sprang forward a step and clasped her hands. #34;You don #39;t want me! #34; she cried.

#34;You don #39;t want me because I #39;m not a boy! I might have expected it. Nobody ever did want me.

I might have known it was all too beautiful to last. I might have known nobody really did want me.

Oh, what shall I do? I #39;m going to burst into.
